Shining a bold spotlight on the interactions that take place in our everyday lives is predominant in the work of Jan Wurm. With vibrant colors and confident outlines, she grabs her viewers’ focus and centers it firmly, not simply on the physical subjects of her paintings, but on how the characters relate to one another, to their environment and, thus, to themselves.
As suggested in the title for her latest show, “all that we have had and all that we will lose”, the artist takes that insight to an even deeper level, immortalizing moments in life that could be considered mundane or trivial and forcing us to contemplate and explore their value in our own lives. In capturing these prosaic events on canvas, she elevates and frames them, much like polishing a stone to expose a beauty and preciousness that is often overlooked.
Painted against the chaos of our present day news cycle, Jan Wurm’s striking works seize the viewer’s attention, reminding us to acknowledge and cherish all that we have and all that we could lose.
