SHOH Gallery is excited to invite you to the opening reception of 'Mapping Light and Color’. We are honored to present this exquisite exhibition of works by Yuzo Nakano and Kazuko Watanabe and look forward to having the gallery exclusively filled, upstairs and down, with their mesmerizing pieces.
At first glance, one might consider Kazuko Watanabe and Yuzo Nakano’s work very different, contrasting Nakano’s bold shapes and measured precision with Watanabe’s intricate and exacting subtlety. But when the viewer takes time to sit with the work and contemplate the pieces together, it becomes clear that these works speak the same language. A harmonious synergy emerges as their colors engage in a dialogue and there is a sudden realization that the geometric lines of Nagano’s piece, “Location in Unknown Circle”, have softened to a lace while the precision of pattern and shape makes itself known in the soft abstracted flora of Watanabe’s “Awakening- as Lotus”. Each deeply explores the interplay of light and color and this exhibition is an invitation to listen in to that conversation.
In 2009, a fire in the artists’ live-work space burned much of their artwork, severely injuring Nakano in the process. This show presents works that have been created in the last decade, namely from 2012, when they were once again settled in a working studio.
